X10 painfully slow without Internet access

Postby gewb » Tue Sep 12, 2017 11:31 pm

X10 is PAINFULLY slow to start up without Internet access, as in 2 minutes and 37 seconds but with access it starts in 13 seconds.

Without Internet access various simple functions take forever such as adding a text box or title to the track...other things like extending the length of a black frame take up to 20 seconds to initiate a mouse click, etc.

This behavior is repeatable on both AMD and Intel systems running Windows 7 Ultimate. I checked the Corel support page but it states "Internet connection required for installation, registration and updates. Registration required for product use."

I normally do NOT allow my Windows computers to have Internet access and am uncomfortable opening up my box to the Internet in order to use VS X10.

Ideas? Should Corel be made aware of this undocumented (and unwanted) requirement to use X10?

I uploaded a video screen capture and uploaded to my Box account (44mb):

Sorry, there must be something wrong with your setup, whether or not VS is connected to the internet makes no difference to startup times or adding any media or text. Just tried on both my setups Win 7 and Win 10 absolutely no difference in startup times or anything else

The behavior you are experiencing does not seem like what the System Requirements say. Here is what the very first line of System requirements say:

"Internet connection required for installation, registration and updates. Registration required for product use."

Thus I would say this is a bug and recommend you report it to Corel.

FWIW, when I first start X10/X10.5 on a freshly booted computer *with* internet access, it takes usually around 90 - 100 seconds before it is ready to use. Thereafter, restarts take only around 10 - 15 seconds unless computer is rebooted again. I have to add, though, that I had similar start up times with X9 and X8.

I haven't measured start ups without internet connection since I never use my computer without internet connection.

I haven't measured start ups without internet connection since I never use my computer without internet connection.

My X10 start times were made several minutes after Windows has booted and stabilized, timed from clicking the launch icon to app load completed.

Can you turn off your Internet connection and start X10? I'm interested to hear what you get. Robert saw no difference yet I can duplicate the issue on two totally different boxes (Intel and AMD).

Hi GEWB

Just tried VS X10 connected to Internet, counting elephants, less than 20 seconds.
Disconnected from Internet, counting elephants, less than 20 seconds.

My C: drive with OS & VS X10 on it is SSD. No difference within a second or two.

I use an HP laptop (win 7 64bit, 2.4ghz clocked AMD multi-core cpu, and 8gb RAM) with VS installed for my movie making class. And of course during class as far as possible I run it without the internet connected. Mainly that's a function of where the class is held: the local library, and in that environment, there are so many wifi (students!) users using the internet that it is painfully slow doing anything on the net.
So some performance data from that machine in the "unconnected space":
- from icon click to splash screen - 5sec
- splash screen to VS workspace image - typically about 70sec.

When the net is NOT connected you will note with both X10 and fully patched X9 that the welcome mode tab is missing - because it's contents are reliant on having the net. Thus, no net, no welcome mode. Reconnect the net and that mode is available again.

And, why is performance like that? In part, the hardware in use, but mostly, the way modern software works with windows.
The hardware - basically a good fast design. They all work but some are better than others.
The software - apps these days (in fact, pretty much since windows 3 hit the streets in the early '90's) apps don't do their own dirty work. They make function calls to the OS with related data - like, 1) connect to this webpage and get xx data from it, 2) validate certificate, 3) verify firewall rules et seq. Set an alarm timer for each call and wait/do something else meantime for the OS to do it's thing and return a response. But if the net is not connected, the alarm timer either runs out or windows returns a not connected message (an example is that infamous 404 message in browsers), which is basically the same thing. And then the software goes on to the next chore. Whilst the timers are not all that long per function, they do add up. And thus the longer time to get started relative to the net connected case.

It seems simple that a check for the net connection could done up-front to avoid all those net calls that don't work, but apparently not. Basically, you have to get used to it . . .

Hi GEWB

My CSX10.5 takes approx. 8 seconds to open with and without internet connection.

I notice from your video that you are not running X10.5 and surprisingly there is no Welcome tab with internet connected????

What version of video studio are you using? is it the trial? View help About for version number.

Have you modified your Firewall to disable Video Studio connections?

Something different with your program?

Thanks for your reply. My VS version is X10.1.14 (64bit Ultimate) and after seeing the issues with 10.5 I'll wait for a better patch before updating. You are correct the Welcome tab is turned off.

As to my firewall, I have tried settings of VS = access and VS = blocked with network = connected and network = disconnected. Results are always as posted.

Correct and that is proper coding.

I've work with programming enterprise level software (not as a programer although I did learn VB) for more than 20 years and understand all you said. And that is a major issue: there is NO good programing reason for a simple local function, such as grab focus and MOVE, to make a call to the network, let alone wait so many recalls before continuing - bad programing.

I have an idea...this may be related to the copy protection program VS uses. I'll need to play with my test box and remove the protection then see what happens.

I'm thinking this because of the ENABLE/DISABLE matrix of my testing - it indicates calls made outside of VS but hooked to VS. This could take a few days.

I have just done some accurate measurements with a digital stopwatch. With the internet running the first startup of VS took 60 seconds. Restarts took 14 seconds. (I know I said above that first start usually took 90 - 100 seconds, but I have to admit that was just my estimate and probably governed by impatience... I did, however, have a Win 10 update last night before turning the computer off, though I doubt this would have affected these times in any way.)

I rebooted and turned off the internet. First startup took 22 seconds and restarts took 10 seconds. Interestingly enough, without rebooting, I turn the internet back on and restarted VS. This time it took 37 seconds to be ready for use. Restarts after that again took 14 seconds.

Hi

Don’t know why we have a difference in times to launch Video Studio
First start this morning with internet took 9 seconds from pressing the icon to the splash screen clearing.
Closed program and waited a few seconds.
Launching again time took 9 seconds

Closed VS
Disconnected internet---- VS launched in 6 seconds
Repeated test – 6 seconds

Connected internet – Launch VS in 7 seconds

Timing differences of few % are expected. So much can be going in the background, especially with Internet connections. Bring up task manager, click on show all tasks & see how few of those tasks are recognized.
